On Painting: Philip Akkerman + Glenn Brown : In Conversation

Join us for On Painting, an exclusive interview where artist and curator Glenn Brown converses with Dutch self-portrait artist Philip Akkerman, held within The Brown Collection, which houses a number of works by both artists.

Akkerman, renowned for his extensive and introspective series of over 5,000 self-portraits, will be the focus of this in-depth conversation, offering a unique exploration of his creative process and the evolution of his painting. Both Akkerman and Brown began their careers at a time when painting was considered unfashionable, yet they have each played a pivotal role in redefining the medium, proving that painting remains a powerful tool for exploring the complexities of the modern world.

While Glenn Brown draws inspiration from the old masters through the appropriation and manipulation of historical works, Akkerman uses classical painting techniques to create self-portraits that transcend multiple genres and styles, always keeping the subject—himself—at the heart of his work.
