Wooden Heart: Exhibition
Our second exhibition presents a wide-ranging selection of Glenn Brown’s work, encompassing drawings and paintings in antique frames, sculptures, editions and three new paintings from 2022.
The exhibition features a mix of recent and earlier works, highlighting Brown’s ongoing engagement with art history and his practice of transforming familiar images and forms with meticulous attention to surface, colour and material. It takes its title from the sculpture Wooden Heart, a work that embodies many of the concerns running through Brown’s oeuvre: the layering of paint over extended periods, the tension between vulnerability and menace, and the dialogue between historical reference and contemporary reinvention.
Together, the works invite viewers to consider how Brown negotiates the space between reverence for his sources and the radical reimagining of their forms. From delicately rendered drawings to heavily textured sculptures, each piece explores the complex relationships between image, object and emotion, encouraging close and sustained observation. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Brown’s practice, revealing how inherited imagery can be transformed into intensely personal and visually compelling works that challenge perception while remaining deeply connected to the histories from which they emerge.
