Ann-Marie James British, b. 1981

Ann-Marie James (1981-) is a contemporary British artist whose work tackles themes of metamorphosis and the cultural past. James was born in Buckinghamshire, and completed her BA (hons.) in Fine Art from Central St. Martins in 2004. She went on to obtain her Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2010 and her MA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2012. She is a recipient of several prestigious awards such as the Queen's Award, Central Saint Martin's Scholarship Awards 2003, The Jealous Graduate Print Prize 2012, MFI Flat Time House Graduate Award 2012, The Derek Hill Foundation Scholarship 2013–2014 and the Artists International Development Fund travel award, Arts Council England 2016. She has also completed a number of residencies in the UK, USA, Italy and Japan. James has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across the UK, Europe and the States. Currently, she works as a lecturer at the University of Suffolk. 

James’ artistic practice explores the idea of change and interconnectedness. She considers how, throughout history, artistic and cultural paradigms have responded to those before them, stretching back to antiquity. She engages with the idea of historicity through her practice, using visual and textual imagery from the 18th and 19th centuries as a foundation to enact a number of artistic techniques, thus imprinting her personal response onto the artwork. Her works are featured in the collections of The British Museum, The British School at Rome, University of the Arts London, Kettle’s Yard Cambridge and The Victoria and Albert Museum.
