Oceanus (Neptune) (1588/90) by Hendrick Goltzius, reflects Renaissance humanism’s emphasis on mankind’s control over nature. In this period, nature was often viewed as a force to be tamed, much like the powerful figure of Oceanus.

As art history progressed, the view of nature shifted. By the Romantic period, following the Industrial Revolution and rapid urbanisation, nature was increasingly seen as powerful, unsettling and uncontrollable, contrasting with earlier ideas of human dominance.
