In this talk, Bice Curiger will explore a kind of figuration that is unstable, where images are ambivalent or in a state of dissolution. Rather than setting out a theory, she will offer close readings of works by artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Meret Oppenheim, Daido Moriyama, Sigmar Polke, Glenn Brown, Laura Owens, Kerry James Marshall and Peter Fischli. Together, these suggest an understanding of reality and art that is contemporary but rooted in history.
These artists, and the debates their work has prompted, have accompanied Curiger throughout her career. For this reason, she will also reflect on her curatorial work, as well as her years as editor of the art magazines.
